Swaylands Estate
Private Residential and Conservation
Swaylands has evolved numerous times over its history. Initially a single property it has been a hospital and a school. In the early 2000s it has been turned back into a series of apartments set in the formal gardens with stunning views into rural Kent beyond. Kaner Olette has been involved in the Swaylands Estate over the course of several years and a variety of projects.
The first was an internal remodelling of one apartment built within the former orangery. This required a close eye to fine contemporary detail as well as establishing a clearer hierarchy and clarity of spaces and the routes between them.
The next project at the Clockhouse was a small glass and iroko pavilion to provide space for the resident’s growing family within a private garden.
The most recent and largest project at the site has been a substantial replacement and refinement of the roof including leadwork, asphalt and clerestorey structures after significant technical failures. This required a highly rigorous approach and collaborative working with the contractor.
