Little Trees Cemetery

Community

Due to the lack of burial space in the district, Crawley Borough Council appointed Kaner Olette to develop a scheme for a chapel, reception and staff facilities as part of a landscaped new cemetery on a site in Sussex near the M23.

The design was based on a simple rectilinear pavilion capable of being constructed in two phases. The multifaith chapel was used a ‘marker’ within the site with its steep pyramidal roof clad in timber shingles. The recessed entrance was approached via a large sheltering canopy supported on irregular placed timber circular columns.

The scheme attained planning permission and the staff facilities were developed in detail prior to funding being withdrawn.
