Walled Garden House

Private Residential

An L-shaped building envelope behind a high historic brick wall offered an opportunity for an interesting open plan living space with strong links to the garden in a house that was crying out for renovation.

The entirety of the existing roof was replaced with a mono-pitch black zinc roof settling below the wall with large roof lights dropping daylight into the deeper plan areas.. The internal spaces were rationalised to a more open-plan style for the living and kitchen areas. A key part of the concept was to reinforce the relationship between the house and its newly landscaped garden. High quality bespoke joinery gives a crafted character to the kitchen and bedroom fittings and wall linings.

Stainless steel rain chains take the water from the gutters and allow for a sleek and deep overhang of the new roof. The Japanese charred timber cladding adds a strong texture and ‘book-end’ the generous glazing.

  • “We needed help and a trawl of local architects on the internet brought me to Kaner Olette whose website looked that bit more interesting than the rest.

Our hands were held every step of the way and our builder remarked that in his 30 years in business he had never encountered an architect with such an eye for detail.

If we ever considered repeating the exercise we would know our first port of call.”
