Kent Barn
Private Residential
An unusual, almost Swiss-style barn in a greenbelt conservation area to be self-built by the client proved to be an interesting challenge for Kaner Olette.
Introducing light to the barn was a primary concern and so rooflights and slit windows were judiciously installed around the building. The spaciousness of the barn’s height were retained with the introduction of a central mezzanine and sunken area, retaining an open plan feel in the main space and giving huge high ceilings to that area without compromising on upstairs space. A corner of bifold doors allows the outdoors to bleed in and provides a soft break between the living space, outside decking and the rolling countryside. The external cladding was salvaged from the existing barn and was hand-scrubbed by the client themselves!
The result is a quirky old-meets-new reimagining of an agricultural barn brimming with detail and texture and nestled cosily into the landscape.
